BUG IN XP EXPLANATION!!

act. if you:

1. Load Notepad in Windows (in my case XP Pro)

2. Type "bush hid the facts" (all in lowercase, no quotes)

3. Save this file under a name of your choice

4. Re-open the file

you will not see the text that you typed, but instead you will see a bunch of squares (or, as I later found out, some Chinese characters - that is, if you have the Chinese fonts installed, which is not my case).

Most people think it's a Windows Notepad easter egg (I thought so myself, to be honest), but in fact, it isn't. It's just a lousy Notepad bug. Let me explain...

I was myself curious about the cause of this phenomenon, and I found out that this text is not the only one to cause problems. There are other strings that cause Notepad to screw up, including "this app can break", which was another version of the bug that generated a lot of buzz. I've personally tested a series of strings that have the same effect, including "this api can break", "this cat can split", "jane can not dance", "text wit hou tcaps" and even "abcd efg hij klmno" and "xxxx xxx xxx xxxxx". What do these phrases have in common? They are made up by four words made up by four, three, three and five letters, all lowercase. So, by induction, all "4-3-3-5" strings should work.
Now, let's get to why this thing happens. First of all, it seems that Notepad writes the files just fine, it just can't read them again correctly. As a proof, try opening your saved file, the one that Notepad screws up, with another text editor. I used EditPlus and it turned out to be OK. So why the Notepad thing then? Well, it's a Windows thing. Notepad uses a Windows function that allows it to figure out whether a text file is Unicode or not. And that function, my friends, is the one that screws it up. Because the way it checks can easily be described as "guessing". And it guesses that the file is actually Unicode, and not Ascii, as it is supposed to be.
CONTD....

UG IN XP EXPLANATION!!

Now, two different but similar explanations can be given.

The first is that, after the ASCII-to-hex conversion of the string, Notepad rearranges the hex codes not according to ASCII standards, but to Unicode, and that messes it up. Here's the example:

Take "bush hid the facts". The hex codes (they can be seen with any hex editor you want to download) for the string are:

62 75 73 68 20 68 69 64 20 74 68 65 20 66 61 63 74 73

Arrange the codes to make up Unicode characters and you get:

7562 6873 6820 6964 7420 6568 6620 6163 7473

You'll notice that every code is hyperlinked. If you click on each one of them, you'll see that each one represents a Chinese (I think) "letter".

So this whole thing's cause is the coincidence that the 18 ASCII characters happen to represent 9 Unicode characters. And, of course, Windows' inability to determine the right encoding of the file.

The second explanation is slightly different, but the basics are the same: the difference between ASCII and Unicode. It's just a matter of Notepad defaults. You see, when you save the file, in the "Encoding" field, the default drop-down is set to ANSI. So, by default, Notepad saves as ANSI. But if you do a File -> Open, the default Encoding is set to Unicode. That's exactly what happens when you double click a saved file. Notepad knows the path, but not the Encoding. So it uses the default Unicode encoding, which spits the Chinese characters as explained above.

And that's about it. No easter eggs, no conspiracies, no Bush interventions. Just plain old Microsoft.

Boost Up Internet Speed Without Software

Above 90% computers all over the world run Windows... and hence another computer trick.
FACT
But do you know that about 20% of your internet bandwidth is reserved by Microsoft.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uses of Reserved Bandwidth
** Windows Automatic Updates rely on this reserved bandwidth.
** Fast loading Microsoft Websites
** Sending Error Reports
** Online Help support in Microsoft Office
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But this can be recovered back...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Remedy
** Start >> Run
** Type gpedit.msc
** This opens the Policy Editor
** Now, Local Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration
** Then, Administrative Templates >> Network
** Now, click on QOS Packet Scheduler
** Now, on Right hand side
** Double Click Limit reservable bandwidth
** Now in Setting Tab
********************* NOTE **********************It says : Not Configured
Reality : The Explain Tab says "By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection"
***************************************************
** So, on Setting Tab select Enabled
** Now, change Bandwidth limit (%) to 0 (Zero) ********************** NOTE ********************Misconcept : This don't means that you won't be able to communicate with Microsoft or any its services !!!
Actually : This reserved Bandwidth is only to accelerate Microsoft internet connections more than other connections !!!
****************************************************
** Click OK !!!
That's All !!!

How to Edit Boot.ini File of window

How to Edit Boot.ini Files

Since boot.ini is a text file, it can be edited with a text editor such as Notepad. However, the attributes must first be changed, Also, care must be taken to preserve the correct extension. Since any mistakes in editing might very well render your system unbootable, it is better to use one of the safer methods that are available. Before using any method, be sure to make a backup copy.

One of the most common reasons for editing boot.ini is to reduce the "timeout" setting.in order to speed up booting. This is easily accomplished by using the System Configuration Utility (often called msconfig).

Using Msconfig to edit Boot.ini

Open Start-Run and enter "msconfig". The box shown below will open. Click the tab "BOOT.INI" and the figure shown next will open. The contents of the boot.ini file are shown and a number of configuration settings are available. In the middle right is a box where the settings for Timeout can be changed. This example is for a dual-boot system and another common reason for editing is to change the default operating system in dual-boot setups. Note that there is a button "Set a Default" as well as buttons "Move Up" and "Move Down" (grayed out here). If there are multiple entries in the boot display, their order can be rearranged here. There are also a number of advanced options that experienced computer users may look at. These other functions are discussed in the Microsoft references given at the end of the article.

Another way to configure Boot.ini

these two most commonly edited settings is to open the Start menu, right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" from the context menu. The System Properties dialog box will open as shown below. In the section "Startup and Recovery" click the button "Settings".

Using System Properties dialog to edit

The dialog box shown in the next figure will open. Both the Timeout setting and the default operating system can be changed here.

Startup and Recovery dialog

To add or delete an operating system or program from the boot display menu, use the "Edit" button on the right of the entry "To edit the startup options file manually, click Edit" as shown in the figure below. For example, if it is no longer desired to dual-boot a system, the unwanted operating system can be removed from the boot display menu this way.

using command line tool bootcfg.exe

Windows XP Professional also has a command line utility for manipulating boot.ini called bootcfg.exe. (It may or may not be in a Home Edition installation.) It is described in this Microsoft reference. It can be used in the Recovery Console to repair a damaged boot.ini file or in a command window to edit entries to the file. There are a number of different switches and these are illustrated in the output to a command window shown below.

Syntax and switches for command-lineuse of Bootcfg.exe

There is another set of switches for bootcfg when it is being run in the recovery console. These are discussed at this Microsoft reference. A discussion of using the tool to repair a damaged setup is discussed here. For example, a damaged boot.ini file can be scanned or deleted and a new version built.

Introduction of boot.ini file of window

Introduction of boot.ini file of window
Boot.ini is one of the very first files that come into play when a Windows XP system is started up. It is a plain text file that is kept in the system root, so it is usually C:\boot.ini. Because it is an essential system file, the attributes are set to hidden, system, read-only to protect it. That means that it will not appear in the file lists in My Computer or Windows Explorer unless the default Windows settings are changed to show hidden files.

Boot.ini contains the location of the Windows XP operating system on the computer. If there is a multi-boot system, the locations of of any other operating systems are also contained. During the startup process, functions from the Windows XP file named "Ntldr" are in charge of getting the proper operating system loaded and Ntldr looks at boot.ini to find out where the operating systems are located and whether a menu should be displayed. Boot.ini can also include entries giving boot options such as Safe Mode or the Recovery Console.

How To Change Internet Explorer With Your Name

How To Change / Personalize Internet Explorer With Your / My Name

Make the Internet Explorer Display Your name on it

A sweet little hack into Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) can personalize it especially for you – by carving your name on the top panel (the one that contains the website name and “Microsoft Internet Explorer” written on it). This cute customization can give you the extra edge – particularly if you want to show off to your friends or your siblings.

The above figure depicts the typical browser window for IE, where the default string of “Windows Internet Explorer” follows the website name. After you carry out the hack, you can change the title text to anything you want – for instance, your own name. As an example, see the figure below, which shows an IE window, but has the text “ABCXYZ” instead of the typical “Microsoft Internet Explorer”.

To perform this crafty hack, do the following:

1. Open the Registry Editor by entering regedit in the Run command.
2. Locate the registry key for the following tree-branch:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
3. Create a String registry value by the name Window Title.
4. Double click on Window Title, and enter the text you want to see in place of “Microsoft Internet Explorer” as its data.
5. Exit the Registry Editor and restart IE.

You will find that the browser window title now displays the text that you put in as the value data in Step 4 above.
